The People’s Market is a Zakat-eligible food bank program that provides an empowering grocery store experience to families facing food insecurity in our community. Our mission is to close the food gap by providing clients from diverse racial and religious backgrounds with halal food and essentials for themselves and their families.
The People’s Market offers a more dignified experience than a regular food bank, with a setup that reflects a grocery store. We have shopping carts that clients can use and aisles they can browse to choose what they need according to their own family’s needs and cultural preferences. We also have a fridge and freezer that contains fresh and frozen items, as opposed to most food banks which only carry dried or canned goods.
High Food Insecurity:
In Dallas County, approximately 1 in 5 residents (20%) face food insecurity, including over 120,000 children who lack consistent access to nutritious meals.
Rising Poverty Rates:
Dallas has one of the highest poverty rates in major U.S. cities at around 17.5%
